Tropical Storm Fengshen Leaves Eight Dead, Two Missing in Philippines
(MENAFN) At least eight people have died and two remain missing after Tropical Storm Fengshen swept across the Philippines on Sunday, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).
Five of the fatalities occurred in Pitogo, a town in Quezon province southeast of Manila, where a falling tree crushed victims to death, said OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo. Three more deaths were reported in the Western Visayas region in the central part of the country.
"We are currently verifying and validating the initial reported eight deaths to determine whether their deaths were storm-related," Castillo stated.
Two individuals remain unaccounted for following a landslide in Quezon, a municipality in Bukidnon province in the southern Philippines. Search and rescue operations are underway.
According to Castillo, the storm has affected around 15,000 families — roughly 30,000 people — nationwide. He noted that 22,000 residents have been forced to evacuate due to rising floodwaters and landslides triggered by the storm across central and southern regions.
The state weather bureau forecasted that Fengshen would exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Monday morning.
The Philippines, located in the Pacific typhoon belt, is battered by an average of 20 typhoons each year, many of which cause deadly floods and landslides.
