Typhoon Kalmaegi Leaves Over Sixty Dead in Philippines
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council confirmed the rising death toll, which includes six victims of a helicopter crash on Tuesday during a search-and-rescue mission, according to local media.
Central Visayas, the region hardest hit by the storm, accounted for the majority of the fatalities. This central Philippine region encompasses the provinces of Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor.
Authorities reported 10 people injured across various locations, while over 1.1 million others have been affected by Kalmaegi’s severe weather.
Heavy flooding and landslides have cut off access to remote communities, and 52 municipalities remain without power, officials said. Local media footage and images depict widespread destruction and massive flooding, particularly in parts of Cebu province.
The disaster follows closely on the heels of a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck northern Cebu last month, killing dozens and displacing thousands.
Relief efforts are underway, with rescue teams attempting to reach areas still isolated by floodwaters and landslides.
Typhoon Kalmaegi, known locally as Tino, made two landfalls in the central Visayas islands starting early Tuesday. Forecasters expect Tino to leave the Philippine "area of responsibility" by Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. It is predicted to regain strength over the South China Sea before approaching Vietnam, where authorities are bracing for its arrival on Friday.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, officials issued warnings Wednesday for heavy rainfall across multiple cities while search efforts continue in Papua for residents missing after flash floods.
Over 20 people went missing a day earlier following sudden floods in two sub-districts in Nduga District, Highland Papua, a state-run news agency reported.
